Review notes

GUNFIELD is worth a closer look if you want gothic, boss rush, nautical, and replayable.

Best for players who want gothic, nautical, pixel art, and boss rush.

Check more carefully if you dislike repetition or grind.

gothic

Setting

Gothic spaces, monsters, or architecture shape the mood.

boss-rush

Play style

A major part of the game is learning and beating standout fights.

nautical

Setting

Water, boats, fishing, or sea travel are important to the feel.

replayable

Fit

The structure gives reasons to return rather than finish once.

pixel-art

Setting

The visual language is pixel-led or deliberately retro.

controller-friendly

Fit

Controller, gamepad, or Steam Deck play comes up as a plus.

strong-atmosphere

Tone

The mood, place, and presentation carry a lot of the experience.

grindy

Friction

The loop may feel repetitive if you dislike grind.

Steam review snapshots

Like Gunlock, you pick your ship and find a handful of weapons in the level that you upgrade on your run.
Nautical
After 2 hours or so I had unlocked everything and money became useless while still having 2/3 bosses to go.
Boss Rush
It's not, but it's just as amazing with the simple Vampire Survivors style roguelike unlocks, and just overall fun gameplay.
Gothic
Personally, I find this quite disappointing, as it severely limits the replayability.
Replayable

Why it fits

Check it if you want action, casual filtered by single-player.
